Since my admission to the Florida Bar in March 1986, I have been involved in all aspects of civil, criminal, appellate and administrative law litigation. I am licensed to practice in the United States Federal District Court, Northern District of Florida. I have litigated dozens of criminal and civil matters through jury trial, in addition to many bench trials in both state and federal court. I have represented over 100 condominium and homeowners associations, and for 12 years was a member of the board of directors of, and was general counsel to, a local community bank. In my general trial practice, I have done a moderate amount of transactional work, in addition to a broad range of litigation involving personal injury, real estate, construction, discrimination, admiralty, maritime foreclosures, commercial issues, collections and condominium litigation. For over ten years, I represented the interests of Allstate Insurance Company and its insureds and have represented the CIGNA Companies, Dixie Insurance Company and the State of Florida Division of Risk Management in its automobile and general liability litigation. I have also represented the interests of BP Oil Company in its underground tank litigation in Florida.

Before entering law school, I supervised the construction of a 65′ sailing ‘junk’ in Thailand, and I worked as a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain, piloting offshore oil field supply vessels in the Gulf of Mexico, and in the Java and South China Seas.

Prior to that time, I worked at a large water sports business in the United States Virgin Islands, instructing SCUBA diving classes and operating thirteen ocean-going vessels. After becoming a member of The Florida Bar, for three years I also owned and operated a marine towing and salvage company in the Florida Panhandle. I graduated from the Florida State University undergraduate program in 1979, with a B. A. in Spanish Literature. I graduated from the Florida State University College of Law with a J.D. degree in 1985. I was certified by the Florida Supreme Court as a circuit civil mediator in 1998 and have mediated cases regularly since then. I speak both Spanish and Thai, although no longer fluently. I was born in Chandler, Arizona, on December 10,1952 and lived in numerous countries around the world as the dependent of a U.S. Air Force pilot.

bgordon@kaglawfirm.com

A native of Fort Walton Beach, Ben is a founding partner in Keefe, Anchors & Gordon.

With over 15 years of experience focused on legal issues impacting businesses and individuals, Ben works to avoid liability triggers as general counsel as well as to resolve disputes through litigation. Ben counsels new and existing businesses on creating a strong foundation for a successful enterprise, including with respect to operating agreements, contracts, and employment issues. In particular, Ben frequently advises clients and litigates issues related to trade secrets, non-compete, non-solicitation, and non-disclosure agreements. Ben’s litigation practice primarily focuses on real estate litigation, commercial litigation, corporate and partnership litigation, and condominium/homeowner’s association litigation. Ben works closely with real estate developers, commercial property owners, bars and restaurants, retail businesses, and the hospitality industry, as well as local Northwest Florida manufacturers, technology companies, and government contractors.

Ben’s practice is strongly influenced by his legal experiences within and beyond Northwest Florida. After graduating from law school, Ben served as a law clerk for the Honorable C. Roger Vinson, Chief Judge for the U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida in Pensacola. Ben entered private practice as an attorney with King & Spalding LLP in Washington, D.C., where he focused on complex business litigation in state and federal courts throughout the country. While Ben continues to spend significant time in D.C., his home is Northwest Florida where he serves local businesses and clients, with his unique understanding of how the local dynamics of this community interrelate with the legal and business realities outside the region.

Ben and his family have a long history of service to our area, serving as teachers, volunteers, and active leaders in our legal and business communities. Ben’s father, the late Honorable Ben Gordon, Jr., served Northwest Florida as a County Judge and Circuit Judge for more than twenty years. Ben continues to serve his community in many roles, including having been appointed by Florida’s governor to serve on the Judicial Nomination Commission for the First Judicial Circuit and serving as the chairman of the First Judicial Circuit’s Grievance Committee B.

Ben and his wife Amanda have two children, with whom they love to travel as often as possible and with whom they are regularly boating when home in our emerald waters.

Hawkins, John W.
Matthews & Jones LLP

jhawkins@destinlaw.com

John Hawkins’ path to the Emerald Coast is familiar to many who now live here full time. John grew up in Dallas, Texas and obtained his education and real world work experience in Texas, but once John experienced the natural beauty of the area and the warmth of its residents, the desire to live here was irresistible.

A graduate of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, with a double major in Finance and Petroleum Land Management, John worked in the oil industry as a landman for a Fortune 500 corporation while obtaining a Masters of Business Administration degree specializing in Management from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. John then became a futures trader for Elf Trading, Inc., the international trading arm of France’s national oil company, Elf Acquitaine, and was involved in risk management and speculative trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), the International Petroleum Exchange in London (IPE), and the Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX), with traders in ETI’s offices in London, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, and Singapore. During his stint in the international commodities markets John attended the South Texas College of Law in Houston, graduating with a Juris Doctorate degree.

In 1993 John relocated to Destin and opened his solo general practice, broadening his commercial litigation experience to include family law, personal injury, misdemeanor criminal defense and business planning. John has been a member of the American Bar Association since he was a law student, and a member of the Okaloosa-Walton Bar Association since 1993. John is a long standing member of the Estate Planning Council of the Emerald Coast, and served as President  of the EPCEC in 2008.

As John and Dana Matthews grew to know and respect each other as colleagues and friends, they shared a vision to create a full service locally based law firm to meet the increasing demand of a rapidly growing Northwest Florida client base, and formed Matthews & Hawkins, P.A. in July, 1998.  Drawing on his practical experience in the business world, John’s practice transformed to concentrate in business planning, estate planning, and litigation of probate and trust matters.  After serving as Managing Partner of the firm for 14 years, in 2012 John decided to become Of Counsel, and now provides private client services in addition to serving as a Florida Supreme Court certified circuit civil mediator and qualified arbitrator.

Outside of her professional activities, Lori has served as a past President of the Junior League of the Emerald Coast and remains a sustainer in that organization.  She is also a charter and Evergreen member of Impact 100 of Northwest Florida.  Professionally, she is an active affiliate with the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors, a former treasurer of the Okaloosa Bar Association and the current Vice President of the Walton County Bar Association.  Her family is involved with a church plant in Santa Rosa Beach – King’s Cross Church – which meets in their backyard.  Lori and Michael have been married for over 20 years; they have a 16 year old son, a 12 year old daughter, 1 dog, 2 cats and an RV!

At Emmanuel, Sheppard & Condon, Lori’s practice is focused on residential real estate closings, but she also advises clients in the areas of general real estate matters, commercial and residential real estate development, business formations and transactions, probate and estate planning.  Lori works primarily in the firm’s Miramar Beach – Sandestin office, but is available to assist clients in our Pensacola and Tallahassee offices and can conduct closings in all 67 Florida counties.

Attorney Michael Weimorts always knew he would live in the local area. His family has been here for six generations and he was raised here. He loves the Gulf, the bay, the rivers, and the woods, and he is also very comfortable with the people here too.

After graduating from Fort Walton Beach High School, Attorney Weimorts pursued his college education with a Political Science major. Four years later, he received his Bachelor’s degree, took a year off, and worked as a lifeguard and deckhand before going to graduate school. Using his Master’s degree in Political Science, he worked as a campaign consultant for the Republican Party on State Representative’s races in Central Florida. He then worked as a lobbyist in Tallahassee for a statewide group of  more than 2,000 doctors.

After working for two legislative sessions, he returned to school for his law degree. Throughout law school, Attorney Michael Weimorts clerked for law firms with litigation practices; enjoying the adversarial process associated with lawsuits.

Upon receiving his law degree, he returned to the Emerald Coast and accepted a position as prosecutor with the State Attorney’s Office. Over the course of his time as a prosecutor, he handled thousands of cases and tried dozens. He then left the State Attorney’s Office and began work with a small litigation firm in Destin, FL. There, he learned to handle personal injury cases and family law matters.

After a few years, he decided to start his own firm. Concentrating on litigation cases, and relying on referrals from former clients, he has established a strong practice focused on personal injury, criminal defense and family law litigation – all based on communicating closely and remaining available for clients.

He remains active in the local community too! He has previously served as a mentor and, later, President of the Board of Directors of the Seaside Neighborhood School. Over the past two years, he has concentrated his efforts on serving as a board member with the Boys & Girls Club of the Emerald Coast.

Andrew D. Wheeler attended the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, and graduated with a Juris Doctorate of law in 2002. Over the past twelve years, Andrew has represented over 2,000 clients in cases involving family law and probate litigation, and counseled clients on elder law rights, long-term care planning and general estate planning. Andrew believes clients desire representation from attorneys who have a thorough understanding of their specific legal issues. Therefore, after beginning his career as a general practitioner, Andrew focused his career on these specific areas of law. He continues to concentrate on those areas today.

Andrew regularly interacts with the public by speaking to groups of people on elder law topics, including long-term care planning and techniques to avoid probate litigation. In 2012, Andrew began teaching seminars on adoption law through the National Business Institute, providing guidance to other attorneys on proper procedures to secure adoptions of children.

While attending law school, Andrew was active in numerous legal writing opportunities, won awards for legal writing and was selected as a member of the Cumberland Law Review. Andrew was then accepted to the Cumberland Study Abroad Program and attended Durham University in Durham, England. While completing a variety of courses that focused on transactional law and business principles, Andrew worked as a research assistant and intern for Chief Magistrate Judge John Ott in the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.

Andrew is married to Regina Wheeler, with whom he has a son, and the family resides in Miramar Beach, Florida. Andrew serves on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Club of Destin and is active in the local chambers of commerce.

In 2012, Joe was awarded an AV rating my Martindale Hubbell. Martindale Hubbell is the “gold standard” in legal publications and is the oldest lawyer ranking entity in the United States. Ratings come directly from peers, lawyers and judges, in the same community and an AV rating is the highest possible rating for both competency and professionalism.

In 2013, Joe was also ranked a 10 of 10 on the legal website AVVO.com. This is a newer form of electronic ranking but some argue more important since its rating system is based upon client reviews not just other lawyers.

In 2014, Zarzaur Law opened its South Walton County office. This office is near Destin, Florida and was opened to better serve the firm’s clients in Okaloosa, Walton and Bay counties.

Joe continues to obtain record verdicts in the panhandle of Florida. He devotes 100% of his practice to handling personal injury/wrongful death cases. He limits his cases to those where the injury is permanent and the harm caused is a threat to community safety. Joe sees that his job is to enforce community safety rules whether they be in a hospital setting or an intersection, the more the community ignores safety rules the more needless harm occurs.

When he is not working (which is not very often), Joe is an accomplished Ironman® triathlete having completed Ironman® races in Brazil and Florida. In addition, Joe loves being on or near the water which is one of the main reasons beautiful Pensacola is his home.

By far Joe will tell you that, aside from his job, his most rewarding experience is being a dad to his daughter. Outside of work and training, his daughter is his life.

He handles his client’s cases like they are his own. His clients are encouraged to call his cell phone. Most importantly, Joe is doing this job because he wants to right the wrongs and help those who need it most. He also wants to deter those who continue to choose negligent and careless behavior. These things motivate Joe and his staff to serve each and every Zarzaur Law, P.A. client like they are the only case.
